Karate Gi

Karate Gi

The Karate Gi, or uniform, is worn by every student during training and consists of a jacket, pants, and your belt. Someone wearing a karate gi is instantly recognized as being a student of karate and most, if not all, dojos will require you to wear one during training. Its light feel and looseness, along with its comfort, allow for greater mobility when executing different techniques which makes it perfect to practice in. The gi is made so that the sleeves and pants are a little shorter than normal, preventing someone from tripping or getting their hands caught in the sleeves. Another thing is its durability; a karate gi can be tugged on, pulled, ripped and can withstand heavy contact with the ground. The karate gi also serves a psychological purpose. It is meant to place the student in a more “real” mindset while training so they are more focused.

Most Schools will allow one to wear any type of white gi, but usually they will request that the schools badge be attached to it. Most uniforms can be bought directly through the school, and some include it for free when a person signs up. On the off chance that your school does not give them out or has ran out of them, there are many places online where they can be purchased, leaving you with the task of sewing on your schools emblem.
